I played trumpet from 5th grade through my senior year of high school. Concert band, marching band, jazz band, pit orchestra for the school's musicals, and some 'side stuff' with small groups. I started out on a Yamaha student model, then begged my parents for a silver King 601.
Well, I got it, and loved how it played. After school, I continued to play guitar, but didn't continue with trumpet. Both of my horns were loaned out to other family members for their kids, and neither have been seen again. Fast-forward to now.

We opted to rent to clear the 'what if' phase, and he wants to continue. So, I picked up a King 601 in Silver that I feel I got for a decent price. Based on what I believe the serial number is, I would have pegged it to have been around '85, but now I'm not certain.
I've read that many of these horns, pre-2000, had a two digit code before the six digit serial number. Mine does not. I have read that the last three of the serial number is stamped at the bottom of the second valve. Mine says USA there. The guide on the first valve slide is most definitely different than the one that was on my horn, and mine was 83/84 vintage. My serial number also happens to be one that could be read 'in either direction'. Based on other serial numbers on other King horns, that can NOT be read in either direction, I -believe- that the serial number starts at the top of the valve and is read downward toward the bottom.

I've seen the links that show correlation of serial number to year, but I don't know how reliable it is. The horn I have appears to be of the newer strain, but the serial number seems to imply that it's older. I would really like some help if anyone is able. Honestly, folks don't pay much attention to year and vintage for most horns after 1980.
